Georgia’s Timeless Qvevri Heritage

Here, among 6th–7th century qvevri vessels, the past feels remarkably alive. This historic cellar in Zesofeli once produced nearly 15 tons of wine each year—far more than the region required. Historians suggest that its wine supplied the soldiers who protected the Kingdom of Iberia and helped secure the eastern borders of the Byzantine Empire.

Every qvevri in this cellar holds more than clay and craftsmanship; it carries centuries of Georgian winemaking tradition. These vessels stand as living witnesses to a culture where earth, time, and human hands come together to create something truly extraordinary.
